STILL IN LOVE AFTER 50 YEARS!!

Aloha!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. I hope that Santa treated you all well and that you all got to spend some good quality time with family.

We have been working super hard this holiday season. I really want to share this story with all of you because I was touched by this story.

I got a call earlier in this month from Melissa. Her and her husband are from Virginia. And they were coming to Hawaii to help his parents celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

When Melissa started to explain that they were recreating her in laws wedding, i was touched. How beautiful to recreate something so special. They had called The English Rose Florist to recreate the flowers. They held the dinner in the Officers Club on MCBH and they needed a cake. The couple was married in Germany at a time that was difficult for them after the war so they never had a wedding cake. I am a firm believer that everyone should have a wedding cake. Not only because I make wedding cakes but because cutting the cake and feeding each goes way back in history and has a wonderful tradition behind it.

So I was stoked to be able to give them the wedding cake they never had. With a little planning, Melissa asked to have a "50" on top with the red roses they were using in the flowers and red and gold ribbon. I added some scroll work and gold dragees. Very simple and elegant. The kind of cakes I love to make.

When we got to the officers club to deliver the cake, Melissa was waiting for us. She and set the table with some fabric and rose petals, but the best part was the wedding pictures in frames on the ledge by the window and the wedding album that was created 50 years ago. Melissa explained some traditions that happens is Germany when you get married.

As we looked through the pictures she explained that the bride has to do something that reflects the grooms job. At the time he was (and forgive me if I say it wrong) but a lumberjack. So the bride and groom in there wedding dress and suit had to saw a log. It was a great picture. The bride also has to shave the grooms face. So there she was in her wedding dress with a razor and shaving cream. The other pictures were beautiful poses in black and white. The love they have in their eyes was something you do not see everyday. It was amazing to look through the pictures and get an idea of who this couple is.

We flipped through there album that had some recent pictures in it and Melissa pointed out one picture that caught my attention. It was of them looking at each other. It looked like posed picture but Melissa explained it was not. they look at each other like this all the time. Even after 50 years of being married they are still that much in love with each other.

We did not get a chance to meet the rest of the family. We had another delivery. But I know they had a wonderful time. They even had to saw a log again! I love traditions.

As soon as I hear from Melissa and her husband when they get back to the mainland I will forward more pictures on but for now here are a few I took.

Congratulations on celebrating 50 years of life and love. We are honored to have been able to be a part of your very special anniversary. Your story is truly an inspiration me. I hope I can reach 50 years with Nick with the same love.

GINGERBREAD COOKIES DECORATED

Aloha and welcome to the last Friday before Christmas!

Wow it has been super busy this holiday season with cookies. I am so excited to have done some wonderful parties. This blog is going to feature a party that happened this past week. Lisa and her staff at Kamehameha School ordered gingerbread men cookies. 8 inch ones to be exact. I was super excited to make traditional gingerbread. its been awhile and it always makes the place smell like the holidays. when she told me what she was doing with the cookies I was super excited. Everyone at the party was to break off into teams, they had a category and they had to decorate the gingerbread men following the theme. The pictures here are supplied by Lisa and i think the back round that was made for the gingerbread to sit on is the best idea. great way to tie the whole theme together!! I was stoked to see these pictures!! i can not remember who won, I will have to find out. One of my favorites is under the superhero category and its the cookies with the head off and the big bubble that screams HELP ME! Enjoy these pictures. I hope the inspire you all to go out and decorate gingerbread men!!

MR & MRS GEORGE SOMMO!

Last week I posted a blog about a winter wonderland cake. Well I heard back from the bride, Lisa yesterday with some pictures that were taken of them cutting the cake. And I wanted to share those pictures along with her e-mail. She was an awesome bride to work with. I loved all her ideas about her wedding and was so excited to make it happen! I am so glad to know that they loved the cake and the cookie favors. Because I had a blast making them.

Thank you again to Lisa and George for letting us be apart of their very special day and Thank you for sending some pictures our way. We can't wait to see all of them at a later date!

LISA'S EMAIL
Thank you sooo much for the beautiful, and I mean BEAUTIFUL, wedding cake!!! I absolutely LOVED IT!!! And I also loved the favors! You did such a great job and I cannot express how grateful I am! Everyone just "oohed" and "ahhed" over the cake and the favors. A LOT of people asked who made them. And I told them about you and about how wonderful you are. I told them that I would go with no one else when it comes to my cakes and cookies from now on! =) I wish you could've stayed for the wedding. But I am sending you some pics. I'll send you better ones when I get the professional ones back.

MERRY CHRISTMAS BABY!!!

Aloha and welcome to your Tuesday!!

We are in the midst of the holiday season!! And we have been swamped with cookie orders, gingerbread men and holiday cakes. And a whole lot of rain!!

I wanted to share this cake we just made for Carla and her office. They held the party at the Honolulu Country Club on Sunday night! Carla is a returning client. She ordered the jukebox cake back in the summer for her mom's birthday as a surprise. I was lucky enough to meet her mom when Carla wanted to try some other flavors for her holiday party. She tries our caramel apple and our chocolate hazelnut crunch. They loved both so they got both!! we made a 2 tier cake and on the base of the cake was "snow" and if you look closely you will see that the cake lights up..AGAIN! Its becoming a popular trend and we can say the in Hawaii we started it!! I am stoked about that. How many people can say they had there cake light up? And keep looking back because I have a few more cakes coming up in the near future with lights on it.
Thank you Carla for supplying me with these pictures. I can not believe I forgot to bring my camera!!

Anyway, I hope this cake inspires you to get out there and celebrate the holidays. For more cakes and holiday ideas check us out at http://www.sunshinescakecreations.com/

WINTER WONDERLAND WEDDING

Aloha! One reason I moved to Hawaii was because I love the warm weather and the beach. The first year here was great. I lived on the North Shore right on the beach. I was in the water everyday soaking up the sun! As the years have gone on I realize how much I miss the snow. Just around Christmas and then it can go away and be summer. When Lisa contacted me earlier in the year about her wedding I was stoked to find out it was a winter wonderland theme wedding. we get so many requests for beach and summer theme cakes but not many people request a snowflake themed cake. I was super excited to meet with her and design her cake. We met one morning and our tasting went for almost 2 hours. Mainly because we were side tacked about so many different things. It was nice talking to her and really getting to know what she wanted for her wedding. When we finally designed her cake we could see it come to life. And I could not wait to make it. Not only did she want a cake but she wanted everyone to have snowflake cookies as favors.

So the week of her wedding came around and I was excited. Her cake came out beautiful. I even added an extra surprise of placing lights in the snow at the base of the cake. Very tiny lights. It added a little extra sparkle. I am big on lights on a cake!! I have never seen it done in Hawaii and I wanted our cake to stand out! And this winter wonderland cake did. It was such a great way for me to start my holiday season!

I was able to sneak down to see Lisa and she looked beautiful. Her dress was so beautiful and had beading that sparkled like falling snowflakes. She had a glow about her as well. You could tell she was truly happy.

Thank you to Lisa and George for letting us make the winter wonderland wedding come to life with cake. We wish you many years of love and happiness and look forward to making more cakes for you in the future! Congratulations.

Enjoy these pictures and I hope it inspires you to dream about the magic and warmth that snow can bring. Happy Holidays. For information and pictures check out out site at www.sunshinescakecreations.com

Speaking of birthdays, I celebrated mine a few days ago. I worked of course. There are no days off to observe birthdays here. We actually helped make Matthew's 1st birthday special. We made a apple and pig themed cake and we helped kids of all ages decorate candy apples. It was so much fun. It was a good way to celebrate my birthday. Thank you to everyone who sent me good wishes.

Anyway, I wanted to share these cake toppers. They are super cute and we can make them any colors, any styles you may be looking for. HONEST PEOPLE, THANK YOU

Aloha
I hope everyone is doing good and you had a wonderful weekend. This blog is not about cakes or cookies or anything that I am making. I want to take this chance to thank whoever handed in my bag at Starbucks by Ward center on Saturday afternoon. There are not that many nice and honest people out there. I got do nervous when I went back to the table and my bag was not there. This was 5 minutes later. I got so scared that my identity was gone, my money was going to be gone, everything. But when nick went inside the girl behind the counter said it was turned in. I was so relived when I saw him carrying it out.
So to that person, THANK YOU so very much for being honest! I am very lucky.

Have a great Monday

THE MARINE CORPS BIRTHDAY

Aloha!!

Wow, its been awhile since I blogged. Sorry for the delay. I wish I could post something everyday. I have so great projects going on and more on the way. I have been very busy and do not always have the time to sit down and post a blog everyday!

So I want to wish The Marine Corps a Happy Birthday. I am lucky to have worked with them again this year. Thank you to all of you who asked me to make your cakes. It was fun to come up with a different design. we even had to make the cake boards this year. Nick worked really hard on building those. It was fun to watch him. For those of you who did not know it but the cake boards are wood. There is only a small block in the back of real cake. The oldest and youngest marine cut it during the ceremony. Not many people know that.

I look forward to work with you all again next year. I already have the design picked out.

I also want to to thank all the veterans out there and that are serving in the military now. I have always supported the military. My dad was int he Army, so was my uncle and my grandfather retired from the Air Force. Now that I live in Hawaii and have worked next to the The Marines and now married to the Navy I really have deeper appreciation for the military. So Thank you for your hard work and sacrifice. I always offer military discount so when you call to place your order mention that you or your spouse is in the military and you will get a discount!!

Enjoy these pictures from Headquarters Battalion Ball and CLC-35. The cakes may not have been edible but everything you see on the cake are.

Happy Tuesday and enjoy the day off if you have one!

OFF BEAT BRIDES

Aloha!
I love weddings. Everything about them are wonderful. From the planning stage to designing all the details to the the couples. Love is a wonderful thing and I know it sounds cheesy but it is. The only thing anyone truly needs is to love and to be loved. Its probably the best feeling to me.

One thing I like about wedding and making wedding cakes is meeting the couple and really getting to learn who they are and how we can make the wedding cake unique just like them. Some couples bring pictures of cakes, some bring the invitation and others have no idea what they want. The traditional cakes are great, simple, white, flowers. But sometimes you get brides who want a little something different. And that is always fun, a lot of colors, shape, designs...... But then you get the OFF BEAT BRIDES. These are the brides that want it totally off the wall and different. And I enjoy throwing these wedding in the mix. It shakes things up, makes people talk a little more. Back in August I made a cake for a client, who I should say now is becoming a friend. She orders from me every chance she gets...Thanks Cely. Anyway, her and Trevor had there wedding on August 2, 2008. She contacted me months prior about her cake. I have blogged about this wedding before. She did a pirate theme wedding. Everything was "piratey" as Cely put it. The officiant who married them was even dressed like a pirate. And I don't mean like a costume you get around Halloween time. This was unique, I thought I stepped back in time to a new place. It was awesome and i was so excited to be a part of this experience.

Anyway, No one says you have to have a traditional wedding. Tradition is good but these days a lot of couples are very unique. Lots of girls have tattoos, some have piercings, some dress different then mainstream. I mean that's how I am. and why should you change? Couple should have whatever they want and feel ashamed of who they really are. And I see a lot of people breaking out of that traditional mold and I love it.

So if you are one of those brides there is an awesome website for you to check out. Its called OFF BEAT BRIDE and they can be found at http://offbeatbride.com/. You can find tips and information on how to stick to who you really are. Its a great website. I like to share these things because I know sometime couple get lost along the way and there is nothing wrong with being unique and having a wedding that reflects who you are!

Here are a few non-tradtional wedding cakes and cake toppers

Happy Sunday!

Vegan and Organic Cakes are here!

In the past few months I have been receiving emails and phone calls from couples that are looking for a vegan wedding cakes. I have also been getting asked if we make organic cakes. Now I love dairy, I love to eat cakes so making vegan cakes never even entered my mind when I was making up my flavor list.
I never like to tell people no. So when my first client called me about her vegan wedding cake it took me a little bit of time to register it and think about some recipes. I did not think it would be easy to create a great tasting cake without dairy and still use high quality products to produce the same cakes I am making now. But with a little research and some experimenting I have come up with a few great cakes. I mean the flavors are so good, the textures are spot on that you would never know it was a vegan cake. I even gave the banana cake to a friend and did not tell him and he said it tasted like cake his grandmother makes........WOW!
I researched and learned about substitutes for eggs. Flax seeds ground up works well for replacing eggs. All kinds of fruit and of course soy products. Which I have to say, I am drinking soy milk now. Its really good in your morning cereal. There is a whole new world to explore with cakes.
Some of the flavors offered right now consist of......
Banana cake
Chocolate cake
Green tea cake
Chai latte cake (which tastes just like a cup chai tea)

I am still researching and experimenting, next on the list will be
Vanilla
Carrot
applesauce spice cake, just to name a few.

On my quest to find good vegan cakes, I used almost all organic ingredients and I thought that I could make organic cakes for the health and environmental conscience clients. So I took some of my recipes and used organic products and they came out great!! So if your want organic cakes, I am your girl!! Call me and we can talk about how to give you an organic cake.

So just because your a vegan or you want to watch what your eating (even if it is cake) don't be disappointed because I can make your cake for you. Please ask for updates on our flavors and set up and appointment to try them!

Have a happy and safe holiday weekend.

In my research I found this website. post Punk Kitchen. This site has some awesome information on being a vegan, how you should eat healthy and some great advice on baking. There are some good recipes too. I have made a few of them and they were Delicious.

Cupcake tiers

Aloha everyone!
I have been getting a lot of calls about cupcake tiers in place of wedding cakes. Its a great alternative to the cake. You can do so many things with cupckes as far as decoration, flavors, even liners...all kinds of things. I am posting a few tiers I have done. Hopefully it will inspire you to want to order cupcakes.

They are even great for kid parties! Everyone loves cupcakes.
All of our cupcakes all have fillings and buttercream. One of the most popular flavors is Chantilly(local) filled. They can be decorated with fondant too. Any decorations can go on top. Flowers and buterflies seem to be popular with weddings.
So check out these pictures and hope you all enjoy the.
Check us out online for more specials, flavors and pictures.

Have a great weekend.

Casino Life

Many of you do not know this but I grew up in Philadelphia. Atlantic city is only a short car ride away. My mom's family is from Brigantine, New jersey. its a small island north of Atlantic City. Spending time with my family "down the shore" was always a fun time. We were always at the beach. Brigantine is very small so no matter where you were you could always see the bright lights of AC. My parents would always go to the casino at nights and my sister and I would always be left behind. I always wondered what so special about going over there. Sometimes my aunt would watch us as my parents would go inside the casino. We would sit out side and wait, play on the beach, go walk the boardwalk. Sometime I would sit and look in the casino floor. Listen to all the noise, the change, and the people having fun. The colors and lights would always amaze me. And the floors....WOW, can you say TACKY. But I loved it.

When I got old enough to go inside the casino, I learned what all the fuss was about. Actually I would sneak in as a older teenager. The first time I won I was so cared yet so excited at the same time. When I was of age and I won, that was even better. Playing games is fun but expensive!! But there is nothing better then jumping int he car at midnight after work and heading down to AC and playing all night and walking out to the boardwalk at sunrise with some money in your pocket!! The sounds and smell of the boardwalk is what I love. And I miss it dearly! If your from the east coast you know what I am talking about. There is nothing like it in the world. The smell of popcorn, and french fries, eating salt water taffy till your teeth hurt. Sausage and pepper sandwich in the AM. Its great!

When I moved here I quickly found out what a big deal casinos and Las Vegas is. I have never been to Las Vegas before but I can identify.

When I have clients ask me for casino and gambling cakes I love it. It brings back all those wonderful memories. I get asked a lot for these types of cakes and this is why I am blogging about them. Below are some recent cakes I have made and there are 4 more on order for later in the year.

I hope you enjoy looking at these as much as I love to make them.
HAPPY WEDNESDAY!
